India
There are landscapes that command awe. And then there’s Ladakh, where silence is not absence but presence, felt in glacial lakes that shift with the light, in monasteries carved into stone, and in the long pause before a yak lifts its gaze. This is a place that changes you in increments: through altitude, through stillness, through the clarity of cold air. And the way our luxury travel designers shape it, it reveals a side of Ladakh that eludes any other itinerary out there.
Completely customisable for you
A deeper look
Your journey begins in Leh, where the air is thin and the light sharp. A luxury camp in Thiksey welcomes you gently, letting you acclimatize among willow trees and monastery chants. Walk through village paths, pause at prayer wheels, and let your body adjust to the rhythm of the mountains.
Explore Leh’s heritage through a guided walk past palace corridors, market lanes, and into prayer rooms where the walls carry stories in gold and pigment. Visit Thiksey and Hemis monasteries at sunrise, take part in a morning prayer ceremony, and stand before the immense statue of Maitreya Buddha with the valley unfolding below.
The road curves upward toward Khardung La, one of the highest motorable passes on earth. Snow-capped silence gives way to the green hush of Nubra Valley. Arrive in Diskit, where poplars line the riverbanks and the dunes hold echoes of Silk Route caravans.
Ride double-humped Bactrian camels across the Hunder dunes. Visit Sumur, where riverbeds shimmer and the Women’s Alliance sustains craft and culture. Share a lunch made on a family farm, raft the Shyok if the mood strikes, or hike to Yarab Tso, a sacred lake hidden in the rock.
Near the border, Turtuk welcomes you with apricots, stone houses, and stories from the Balti people. Wander through Nang Chung homes, learn about their history, and return to Diskit as the sun drops behind the mountains.
The road to Pangong traces the Shyok River. Stop at Panamik’s hot springs, then arrive at a lake that shifts colour with the wind. At night, the sky turns glassy and infinite. You sleep under stars that feel closer than usual.
Explore Spangmik village, watch Brahminy ducks skim the lake, and visit families raising Pashmina goats. The landscape here belongs to Changchenmo and Pangong ranges—snowcapped, mirrored, otherworldly.
You begin early, crossing either Wari La or Khardung La depending on the conditions. Along the way, yaks graze, and shepherds tend to Pashmina flocks. Return to Leh, where a slower evening lets everything settle.
A new silence greets you in the Rupshu valley. Nomadic settlements dot the horizon, and high passes frame the road to Tso Moriri. A picnic stop might include snowmelt tea and sweeping views. Settle into your camp beside the lake where the stillness holds.
Meet the Changpa community and visit Korzok village, home to one of Ladakh’s oldest monasteries. Spend time at the Tibetan Refugee School or wander the lakeside where reflections feel more vivid than reality.
The drive back to Leh follows Tanglang La, where switchbacks cut across sweeping ridgelines and green valleys unfold like canvas. It’s less a commute, more a slow descent from a rarified world.
A new landscape waits. The monasteries of Phyang and Likir hold stories in fresco and flame. The confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers feels like a meeting of time itself. In Basgo, mud-brick fortresses rise from clay hills like something remembered.
In the days that follow, visit Ridzong’s quiet monastery, the copper-gilded statue of Shey, and the fresco-lined halls of Mangyu. Capture Lamayuru’s otherworldly geography—the “moonland” that seems shaped by hands not quite human. Spend time with the Drokpa community in Dah and Hanu, where festivals and flora still follow an older calendar.
On your final journey back to Leh, stop at Alchi Monastery, one of Ladakh’s oldest and most intricate. With its Kashmiri-style frescoes and clay Buddhas, it feels like an echo preserved in colour. You arrive in Leh with your pace adjusted and your senses full.
There’s something about stays that make you want to linger. With Footprint, you can stay at a London townhouse where the city runs just beyond your window. A lodge in the Scottish Highlands where the fireplace is always lit. A suite in New York where room service feels like a restaurant reservation. The right stay isn’t just where you rest— it’s where the experience begins.
